ReadingTips for Parents

The Louisiana Department of Education encourages all students to read every day during the summer. Reading is the greatest factor in your child’s overall academic success. Children who read more do better in school. Our goal is for every student to become a capable reader and to develop a love for reading. Parents can help their children reach that goal by reading to them and with them daily.  If your children are already reading, encourage them to read at least 30 minutes every day.  Involve them in reading activities at the public library. Help your child see that books are “passports to the world. “

Tips for PreK - 2 Parents

Read with and to your child and talk to them about what they are reading.

Talk about the pictures in the story.

Encourage your child to read for a specified period of time every day.

Before getting to the end of a story, ask your child what he/she thinks will happen next and why.

Ask your child to tell you in his/her own words what happened in the story.

Make a game out of reading by taking turns with your child reading parts of the story.

Read to your child from a variety of children’s books, including fairy tales, song books, poems, and information books.

Encourage your child to re-read books, poems, nursery rhymes, and fairy tales.
