History

W.T. Henning Elementary School opened in 1953 to serve the growing population of Sulphur after World War II.

William T. Henning was a prominent business leader and community member in Sulphur, Louisiana, and is known for his contributions to the local phone company and the city's first City Council:

  • General mercantile store: W.T. Henning owned a general store on Huntington Street, among other early Sulphur businesses.
  • Cameron Telephone Company: In 1928, W.T. Henning founded Cameron Telephone Company, which brought the first phone service to Hackberry and Cameron Parish.
  • City Council: W.T. Henning served on Sulphur's first City Council.
  • School Board: W.T. Henning served as president of the School Board.
